COP30 opening: “The Paris Agreement is delivering real progress, but we must strive courageously to achieve more” Simon Stiell

COP30 has shown that climate cooperation is more alive than ever

Below is the Spanish translation of the statements made by Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of UN Climate Change, during the closing plenary session of COP30 held in Belém (Brazil) on Saturday, November 22, 2025.

Excellencies, colleagues,

dear friends:

We knew that this COP would be held in a stormy political context.

Denialism, division, and geopolitics have dealt heavy blows to international cooperation this year.

But, friends, COP30 has shown that climate cooperation is more alive than ever, keeping humanity in the fight for a habitable planet, with a firm determination to keep the 1.5°C target within reach.

I am not saying that we are winning the fight against climate change. But it is undeniable that we are still in it and that we are fighting back.

Here in Belém, nations have chosen unity, science, and economic common sense.

This year, much attention has been paid to the retreat of one country.

But amid strong political headwinds, 194 countries stood firm in solidarity, with unwavering support for climate cooperation.

194 countries representing billions of people have said in unison that “the Paris Agreement is working” and have decided to take it further and faster.

The first BTR Synthesis Report shows the implementation of the Paris Agreement and highlights factors that facilitate and hinder progress.

Below is the Spanish translation of the statement by UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell on the publication of the Synthesis Report of the Biennial Transparency Reports (BTR), released on October 31, 2025.

This first Synthesis Report of the Biennial Transparency Reports (BTR) marks another milestone in the implementation of the Paris Agreement.

The submission of more than 100 biennial transparency reports is a clear sign that Parties are beginning to actively implement the Paris Agreement, with practical and real measures, across economies and societies.

Based on the first biennial transparency reports from 109 countries, whose data is available, this UN Climate Change synthesis report provides valuable initial insight into the diverse progress of various countries based on the information and data reported up to 2022.

It shows that climate action is being implemented systematically and driving real-world progress, but it must be scaled up and accelerated.

Simon Stiell on the eve of COP30: The Paris Agreement is making real progress, but we must accelerate the pace in the Amazon

Below is a statement from UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell, posted on his LinkedIn profile on Sunday, November 9, 2025, on the eve of COP30, which will be held in Belém, Brazil, from November 10 to 21, 2025.

On the eve of COP30, one thing is clear: the Paris Agreement is making real progress, but we must pick up the pace in the Amazon.

Devastating climate damage is already occurring, from Hurricane Melissa that hit the Caribbean, super typhoons that ravaged Vietnam and the Philippines, to a tornado that swept through southern Brazil.

That is why COP must achieve three things:

It must send a clear signal: nations are fully committed to climate cooperation, which means agreeing on solid results on all key issues.

Local climate leadership is key to achieving healthier, more prosperous, and safer communities and economies: Simon Stiell at the COP30 Local Leaders Forum

Below is the Spanish translation of the message from Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of UN Climate Change, at the Bloomberg Philanthropies Local Climate Action Summit, held at the COP30 Local Leaders Forum on November 5, 2025, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Your Excellencies, mayors, governors, leaders,

It is a privilege to be here.

We may be 1,500 miles away from COP30 in Belém, but the road to success runs through Rio.

Because cities, states, and regions are where the fight against climate change can be won or lost.

Our new synthesis report on nationally determined contributions (NDCs), released last week, shows that humanity is making progress thanks to climate cooperation. It also shows that subnational actors are playing an increasingly important role in achieving this progress.

Action is improving every year, but we need to accelerate: Simon Stiell on the Synthesis Report of the NDCs

Below is the Spanish translation of the statement by Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of UN Climate Change, on the publication of the NDC Synthesis Report on October 28, 2025.

We are in a new era of climate action and ambition. Countries are setting national climate goals—and plans to achieve them—that differ in pace and scale from any before.

Ten years after the adoption of the Paris Agreement, we can say without a doubt that it is delivering real results. However, it must work much faster and more fairly, and that acceleration must begin right now.

The scale and severity of the climate crisis have never been more apparent. The brutal droughts, floods, storms, and wildfires caused by climate change are hitting every nation harder every year, affecting millions of lives and vital infrastructure, reducing GDP, and driving up prices.

The foundations have been laid and we are heading in the right direction. Now we need to act urgently: Simon Stiell, referring to the Progress Report on National Adaptation Plans.

Below are statements made by Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of UN Climate Change, on the occasion of the presentation of the Progress Report on National Adaptation Plans, published on October 21, 2025.

Good morning, everyone, from Brasilia. Thank you for joining us. I want to begin by reminding you why adaptation and strengthening resilience are so important.

Every year, the effects of climate change are more intense and uneven. In August, I returned to Carriacou, my home island, which was devastated by Hurricane Beryl last year.

Although the spirit of the people is incredibly strong, many continue to struggle to rebuild their lives. The determination to recover is palpable. It has been overwhelming.

But I'll summarize it.

This new era of climate action must bring our process closer to the real economy: accelerating implementation and spreading the enormous benefits of climate action to billions more people.

Connecting cabinet rooms with boardrooms and living rooms is the way to empower climate action and achieve this goal.
